According to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) there will be an estimated 1,437,180 new cases of cancer diagnosed this year. A sobering 565,650 people will die from this disease in 2008. Of that number, researchers believe that over 1/3 of those cancer deaths are related to being overweight or obese, lack of physical activity and improper nutrition. Anyone can develop cancer. Certain risk factors such as age, gender, race and genetics can not be controlled. However, certain risk factors such as physical activity, diet and weight management can be controlled.
There is hope! According the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov) there are approximately 10.8 million Americans who are considered to be cancer survivors. The five year relative survival rate of all cancers is 66 percent, which is a large increase from the late 1970's when only 50 percent of diagnosed people lived past five years. Cancer accounts of one in four deaths in the United States and is second only to heart disease deaths reported.
According to the American Cancer Society, for those Americans who do not use tobacco, dietary choices and physical activity are the most important modifiable determinants of cancer risk
